Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets Banned

Companies stating the importance of saving tatas, organized athletic events to raise awareness, and now bracelets that state "I Love Boobies" are all the rage in raising awareness for breast cancer and its prevention. While these wristbands have become popular, especially within the teen community, not all demographics find them to be necessary or particularly amusing. School officials in New Brunswick and many American schools, including some in California, Colorado, Idaho, Florida and Wisconsin have banned students from wearing these bracelets. These officials claim that the statements made on the "I Love Boobies" silicone wristband that students have been wearing is inappropriate for educational atmospheres.

These wristbands come in a variety of colors and can be purchased at many popular teen-oriented stores in shopping malls across the U.S. The Keep a Breast Foundation developed the "I Love Boobies" wristband in order to raise teen awareness of breast cancer and to raise money for treatment and prevention efforts. Many teenagers claim that these wristbands attract attention from all types of audiences and helps to open a gateway of communication. While these wristbands can certainly serve a useful purpose, not all students are wearing them for the reason of raising awareness but merely out of humor or in effort to gain personal attention from peers and school officials.

However, in many cases, wearing these wristbands allows teens to freely speak about issues such as breast cancer awareness and prevention. Many teens believe that breast cancer is nothing to worry about until they become older; however, it is never too early to begin detection efforts and gain knowledge about this disease. This form of jewelry opens up communication about this disease that would otherwise be difficult to talk about. Some teens also feel that they are able to show support for family members who have experienced this disease through wearing these wristbands.

While these wristbands can certainly open up communication between teenagers and educators, other teens have also begun to cross the line by wearing clothing and other accessories that contain the "I Love Boobies" logo. While a bracelet may not attract too much attention, wearing such a slogan across the front of one's shirt is definitely a distraction to educators and other peers within a learning environment. Therefore, many school officials have found that it is easier to forbid all forms of attire containing this characteristic phrase in effort to maintain control over appropriate student behavior.

Even though many parents and community members can understand the point of view of school administrators, it is a shame that the lines of communication that were previously opened by this jewelry have been closed by this ban.
