In the 18th century there was a satirical opera called the beggars opera. In the 20th century a German writer wrote a play, based upon this 18th century work, called the three penny opera.
It was much hated by Hitler in the thirties and this writer was banned from the country. The reason for this was that this literary work ridiculed the state of affairs in pre war Germany. Both the beggar’s opera and the later work by the German author were all about the antics of thieves who in the end triumphed in spite of their wayward lifestyle. They were meant to ridicule the conventional operas which had been imported from Italy and had pretentious divas singing the arias. These operas were always only the prerogative of the rich and wealthy of society.
Of course the name of this opera has nothing to do with the modern concept of auctions that are being held on line these days, apart from that it costs pennies to enable you to participate in these sales.
As with all sales, both conventional and on line ones, anyone can participate in these, both rich as well as poor. The object is for the seller to receive the best price for their possession. In turn, the buyer will get the object he wants perhaps for a fraction of the price it will cost in the shops. This is the purpose of such an event.
Of course, if you participate in such a sale on the internet, you never get to see the object you are interested in unless you are the lucky winner of the race to obtain it. You have to have a lot of faith in the description and the photograph of the gadget advertised on these sites.

The name for these sites comes from the amount by which the stake goes up, namely one penny at a time. However, this amount is only hypothetical, as the chips cost more than this amount. If you are contemplating on having a go at a site such as this, it has to be remembered that the rules are somewhat reversed. You can bid on these items, but if you lose the race for ownership, then you lose the money you have wagered.
