Do ready-made curtains fit all windows?

Ready-made curtains typically come in several different widths and lengths. When measuring for the correct fit, add six inches to the length as this is where they should be fitted (6" above the window). Another six inches should be added to the width, allowing them to extend six inches to each side. The recommendation for the width is that they should be one and a half times the width of whatever they are to be hung from - a curtain pole, curtain rod or the tracking. This will allow the look of fullness which is essential for giving the curtains a good look.

The only trouble with buying ready-made curtains is if your windows are not the traditional size. There are several sizes of ready-made curtains that are available including:

  • 46 x 54 inches
  • 46 x 72 inches
  • 46 x 90 inches
  • 66 x 54 inches
  • 66 x 72 inches
  • 66 x 90 inches
  • 90 x 54 inches
  • 90 x 72 inches
  • 90 x 90 inches
  • 138 x 54 inches
  • 138 x 72 inches
  • 138 x 90 inches

If the store with which you are shopping for your ready-made curtains sells them in pairs, you will receive two curtains. Using the example of a window that is 32 inches wide and 60 inches in height, which is one of the typical sizes of double-hung windows, you would need a pair of curtains that together measure 44 inches wide and 66 inches long. This would allow the six inches that are needed on each side for the width and the height for hanging them six inches above the window.

This is not a typical size for ready-made curtains. Therefore finding a pair of curtains that are this width and height is not likely. The closest curtain measurements for this size window measures 66 x 72 inches, which is larger than what is needed. The other option is to buy ready-made curtains that are 46 x 72 inches and leave four inches to each side rather than six inches. This size would still hang six inches longer than what is needed.

This may be a problem depending on how far from the floor the bottom of the window is located. Many homes that are constructed usually place the top of the windows that are installed at the same height as the top of a doorway. The standard doorway is 80 inches in height. If your home was constructed using these parameters, the curtains measuring 46 inches x 72 inches would not be too long.

The most important thing is for the curtains to look good and enhance the room in which they are being hung. If you cannot find the right size ready-made curtains, you may need to custom order your curtains in order to create the look that you want to create. Make certain you always measure your windows before ordering curtains. This can save a lot of problems later.
